The 7-part scholarship application checklist

Before you write a single word

Most rejected applications fail before the writing stage. They target awards the applicant does not qualify for, or they miss a document that cannot be produced in time. Work through this sequence first.

  • Confirm eligibility line by line. Nationality, age, degree class, years of experience and language scores are hard filters — not preferences.
  • Map the deadline backwards. References and transcripts take the longest. Start 10 weeks before the closing date.
  • Download the official guidance PDF. Selection criteria are usually published. Highlight every criterion and answer it explicitly.
  • Shortlist three programmes, not one. A portfolio approach protects you against a single rejection.
  • Check the funding mechanics. Some awards pay after enrolment; you may still need proof of funds for the visa.
  • Draft the hardest document first. Usually the statement of purpose or research proposal.
  • Get one external reader. Someone who does not know your field should still understand why you deserve the award.

FAQ

Common application questions

Do I need IELTS for every scholarship?

No. Many programmes accept a degree taught in English, Duolingo, or an internal test. Check the funder's language policy — it is usually a separate document from the academic criteria.

Can I apply before graduating?

Often yes, provided you graduate before enrolment. You will usually need a letter from your university confirming your expected completion date.

How many scholarships should I apply for?

Three to five well-prepared applications outperform fifteen rushed ones. Balance reach, match and safety awards.

What if my grades are average?

Lead with professional impact, research output or community leadership. Many awards weight experience and potential as heavily as GPA.
